French
Our Vision for French at Allenbourn Middle School
At Allenbourn Middle School, we believe that learning a language opens doors to new cultures, experiences and opportunities. Our French curriculum develops confident communicators who are curious about the wider world and respectful of different languages and cultures.
Through an ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in French. They build vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation while gaining confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We encourage pupils to become resilient language learners who can use strategies to understand unfamiliar language and express their ideas. Exploring French-speaking countries and cultures develops awareness of diversity and prepares pupils to become lifelong language learners.
How French Links to Other Subjects
French supports learning across the curriculum by developing communication, memory, problem-solving and analytical skills.
Links with English are developed through exploring grammar, sentence structure, word origins and pronunciation. Comparing French and English vocabulary and structures helps pupils understand how language works.
Mathematical skills are reinforced through activities involving numbers, calculations, dates and time. Geography and History links allow pupils to explore French-speaking countries, cultures and significant events.
French also connects with Music, Art, Science, PE, RE and PSHE through topics including songs, traditions, festivals, food and cultural celebrations. These experiences help pupils appreciate different perspectives and respect diverse communities.
How You Can Support French at Home
Encourage your child to share their learning and celebrate their progress. Building confidence takes time and making mistakes is an important part of language learning.
Regular practice of vocabulary and key phrases through classwork, language-learning apps or pronunciation activities helps strengthen confidence and recall.
Encourage your child to engage with French beyond the classroom through music, films, books, games and online resources. Exploring French culture through food, festivals or travel helps pupils understand the value of learning another language.
