Music
Our Vision for Music at Allenbourn Middle School
At Allenbourn Middle School, we believe that music is for everyone. Our Music curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong appreciation of music while developing pupils’ confidence, creativity and understanding as musicians.
Through practical workshops, pupils explore a wide range of musical styles, genres and traditions, developing an understanding of the conventions that shape music across different eras and cultures. Performance, composition and music production are at the heart of our curriculum, providing pupils with opportunities to create, collaborate and develop their own musical identity.
We believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to experience the joy and challenge of making music. Through regular practical experiences, pupils develop important skills including listening, creativity, resilience, teamwork and self-expression. These experiences build confidence and provide a strong foundation for future musical exploration and discovery.
How Music Links to Other Subjects
Music supports learning across the curriculum by developing creativity, communication and critical thinking. Pupils explore links with history and culture by studying music from different time periods, societies and traditions, helping them understand how music reflects the world in which it is created.
Music also develops mathematical understanding through rhythm, notation, pattern, structure and timing. Links with English are strengthened through interpreting lyrics, exploring meaning and communicating ideas through performance and composition.
Through collaborative music-making, pupils develop social skills, confidence and respect for the contributions of others. Music provides opportunities for pupils to express themselves, work as part of a team and appreciate different perspectives, supporting their wider personal development.
How You Can Support Music at Home
Learning a musical instrument requires discipline, patience and commitment, but it is one of the most rewarding skills a child can develop. Encourage your child to practise regularly and celebrate their progress, regardless of their starting point.
Experiencing a wide range of music at home through listening, singing and sharing musical experiences is also important. Discussing music together helps children develop their listening skills, confidence and understanding of how music can express ideas, emotions and experiences.
Encourage your child to attend concerts, performances or musical events where possible, and support opportunities for them to create and share their own music. Above all, nurturing a positive relationship with music helps children develop a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of the subject.
