Geography
Our Vision for Geography at Allenbourn Middle School
At Allenbourn Middle School, we believe Geography helps pupils understand the world they live in and their place within it. Our curriculum develops curious geographers who explore the relationships between people, places and the natural environment.
Geography is more than locating places on a map. Through a range of sources, fieldwork and enquiry-based learning, pupils investigate how the world works, how environments are shaped and how human actions influence our planet. They develop the knowledge and skills needed to ask questions, analyse information and suggest solutions to real-world challenges.
Our curriculum encourages pupils to explore key geographical themes including climate change, sustainability, development, population, inequality, weather and physical landscapes. Through projects, presentations and independent learning, pupils develop confidence in communicating their ideas and understanding their role in creating a more sustainable future.
How Geography Links to Other Subjects
Geography supports learning across the curriculum by developing enquiry, problem-solving and analytical skills. Links with Science help pupils understand physical processes such as climate, ecosystems and the natural environment, while History and RE provide opportunities to explore how places and societies have developed over time.
English skills are developed through research, presentations and communicating geographical ideas, while Mathematics supports the interpretation of data, graphs, maps and statistics. Geography also contributes to pupils’ personal development by exploring global issues, sustainability and human impact, helping pupils become informed and responsible citizens.
How You Can Support Geography at Home
Encourage your child to be curious about the world around them by asking questions about places, environments and current events. Geography is everywhere, whether exploring a coastline, walking beside a river or discussing news stories about climate change and global issues.
Encourage your child to investigate questions such as: Where does something come from? Why does this happen? How could it be improved? Visiting different places, using maps, watching documentaries and exploring geographical topics together can help develop their understanding and enthusiasm for the subject.
By encouraging curiosity and a desire to understand the world, you can help your child develop the mindset of a geographer.
