Our Vision for Art at Allenbourn Middle School

At Allenbourn Middle School, we believe that every child is an artist. Our Art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, curiosity and confidence, enabling pupils to experiment, create and express themselves through a wide range of artistic disciplines.

Over their four years at Allenbourn, pupils develop skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media using a variety of materials, including paint, ink, pastels and clay. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils build their technical skills while developing creativity, resilience, problem-solving and critical thinking.

Pupils explore the work of historical and contemporary artists, as well as artists from a range of cultures and artistic traditions. By studying different styles, movements and techniques, they develop an appreciation of art's role in reflecting and shaping the world around us.

Art lessons encourage pupils to become independent, reflective learners who are proud of their achievements. We celebrate their work through displays, exhibitions and competitions, while specialist teaching and enrichment opportunities help foster a lifelong appreciation of the visual arts.

How Art Links to Other Subjects

Art supports learning across the curriculum by developing observation, communication and critical thinking skills. Pupils use literacy skills to research artists, record ideas and evaluate their work, while mathematical concepts such as shape, pattern, proportion, scale and perspective are explored through practical activities.

Art also supports pupils' personal development by encouraging resilience, creativity and respect for the ideas of others. Through studying artists from different cultures and time periods, pupils broaden their understanding of the world and strengthen our Rights Respecting School ethos. Strong links with local organisations and community exhibitions provide opportunities for pupils to share and celebrate their work beyond the classroom.

How You Can Support Art at Home

Encourage your child to draw regularly, particularly from observation, as this is one of the best ways to develop artistic confidence and skill.

Talk to your child about the artwork they create in school and encourage them to share their sketchbook with you. Visiting galleries, museums or local exhibitions, or simply exploring artists online together, can help develop their appreciation of art and inspire their own creativity.

Most importantly, celebrate your child's effort, imagination and progress. Confidence grows when creativity is encouraged and valued.
