STEM Challenge

Year 8 STEM Challenge at Bournemouth University - Miss James

On Tuesday 12th March, 5 Year 8 girls took part in a STEM competition held at Bournemouth University. The evening was held in the University’s newest facility, the Fusion building, and was heat 1 of 3 to decide which schools would make it to the final.

The challenge was set by ‘Soroptimist International Bournemouth’ and required the girls to design and build something that would benefit a poor country. The project was started in October and the group of students had been working on it every week up until the end of February. The project ideas had to be submitted and sent to a panel of judges before the heats took part.

The group who called themselves ‘The Age of Gizmo’ designed an AI robot with a purpose of helping countries that are prone to natural disasters. Their chosen country was Haiti as the area is prone to earthquakes. The robot (Gizmo) was designed to display medical advice, early warning systems and also manoeuvre over rough terrain. The girls had also chosen for Gizmo to be part of small communities within the country to provide education for both adults and children.

On the evening they showed confidence when being quizzed by seven different judges in a dragon’s den style pitch. They represented the school well with their hard work, determination and ability to enjoy themselves whilst doing it.

Although we didn’t make it into the final, all girls have received a certificate of participation and a CREST award for their project work.

Well done to the girls and thankyou to the parental support on the evening. Also special thanks to Mr Hazell for helping them with the building of Gizmo.
