Personal, Social & Health Education
Our Vision for PSHE at Allenbourn Middle School
PSHE plays a vital role in preparing pupils for life beyond school. Our curriculum develops the knowledge, skills and attributes pupils need to stay healthy, safe and confident while becoming responsible and respectful members of society.
Through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum, pupils develop their personal, social and emotional understanding. They build on previous learning as they progress through Years 5–8, developing the confidence to express their thoughts and opinions, make informed decisions and navigate the challenges of modern life.
Key themes including mental health, relationships, consent, discrimination and online safety are revisited throughout the curriculum, allowing pupils to develop their understanding over time. Through PSHE lessons, assemblies and dedicated events, pupils are encouraged to develop aspirations, self-belief and the ability to respect different beliefs, cultures and life choices.
Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils’ wellbeing, behaviour and safety while promoting the values of a Rights Respecting School. Pupils learn about their rights and responsibilities, develop empathy and understanding, and are encouraged to become active and responsible global citizens.
As a Gold Rights Respecting School we embed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into our daily culture. This links to PSHE by teaching children about equality, dignity, and active citizenship. The UNCRC articles act as the moral compass for the entire curriculum.
How PSHE Links to Other Subjects
PSHE supports learning across the curriculum by developing communication, critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Links with Science and PE support pupils’ understanding of health, wellbeing and the human body, while Food Technology reinforces the importance of nutrition and healthy choices. English provides opportunities for pupils to explore personal perspectives, emotions and different viewpoints, while Mathematics supports financial education through concepts such as budgeting and responsible spending.
PSHE also connects strongly with subjects such as History, Geography and RE through exploring themes including equality, human rights, social justice and diversity. These links help pupils develop respect for others and understand their role within a wider community.
How You Can Support PSHE at Home
Encourage open and honest conversations about emotions, relationships, health and wellbeing. Listening to your child’s thoughts and experiences helps build confidence and supports positive decision-making.
Model respectful relationships, healthy choices and positive behaviours, as children learn greatly from the examples around them. Discuss topics such as equality, diversity, online safety and current issues to help develop empathy and critical thinking.
Support your child in developing independence through everyday experiences such as managing money, making responsible choices and reflecting on their own wellbeing. Encouraging curiosity, kindness and respect helps children become confident and responsible members of society.
