Dorset Track and Field Cup

We travelled to Salisbury with our KS3 boys’ and girls’ teams to take part in the Dorset round of this event. You may ask why Salisbury was hosting a Dorset competition — it’s a long story involving King’s Park being out of action, with no other suitable venue available anywhere in Dorset!

With no athletics track to train on, only two weeks’ access to the field for practising throwing events, and no long/triple jump pit (washed away and now condemned), the pupils did an incredible job. They represented both themselves and Allenbourn superbly with their commitment and endeavour throughout the day. For some, it was the first time they had competed in an event like this, and they had to do so without the opportunity to practise on a proper track or even flat ground.

Although it was a team event, several special mentions must be made. The girls’ relay team of Lexi, Lottie, Edith and Gwen won their race in fantastic style; Will stormed to victory in the 100m; and Year 7 pupils Osian and Eliza both impressed in the high jump, with Osian achieving a new PB of 1.47m.

Louie produced a brilliant run in the 200m, crossing the line in first place with a fist pump full of pride and achievement — made even more impressive considering his training had consisted of running up and down an 80m lumpy straight! Maisie and Eliza also scored an outstanding number of points for the team, achieving 40 and 44 points respectively.

Alongside these performances were the gritty runs, throws and jumps from every single member of the team, many competing in events outside their comfort zones to earn valuable points. Every performance contributed to the team’s overall success, resulting in both the boys’ and girls’ teams coming 3rd in the whole of Dorset.

A massive well done and congratulations to everyone involved!
